Past Continuous Tense

Form: Was, were + v. ing

The main verb is the infinitive without 'to' plus '-ing':

1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในอดีตในเวลาที่บ่งไว้ชัดเจน เช่น

I was learning Chinese at ten o'clock yesterday.

At eight o'clock last night we were watching television.

2.ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่เป็นเวลานานในเวลาเดียวกันในอดีตจะใช้ Past Continuous กับทั้งสองเหตุการณ์นั้น

While Bob was writing a letter, his brother was doing his homework.

The students were talking while the teacher was writing on the blackboard.

3. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต เหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นและกำลังดำเนินอยู่ และมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งซึ่งเป็นเหตุการณ์สั้นๆ เข้ามาแทรก

เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดก่อนและกำลังดำเนินอยู่ใช้ Past Continuous

เหตุการณ์สั้นๆที่เข้ามาแทรกใช้ Past Simple

When I came home my mother was talking on the telephone.

While/As he was walking past the building, he heard a scream.

While I was walking to school, I saw a snake.

Note: แต่ถ้าเหตุการณ์ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์นั้นเกิดขึ้นในขณะเดียวกัน หรือเกือบขณะเดียวกัน ก็ให้ใช้ Past Simple ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์
