Going to St. Ives - Solution

by

The older form of the English word 'met' can be a bit confusing.  Today, 'met' typically means that you are somehow introduced to someone or that you are meeting, either as arranged or unexpectedly.  In the older form, 'met' indicates that the speaker is going in a different direction than whomever it is they happen to be meeting on the road.

With that in mind, the first line of the rhyme indicates that there is only one person going to St. Ives.
