Job market to feature technology, service

Will the class of 2009 be totally prepared for college or will it epitomize of mediocrity?

As technology changes and conventional methods of teaching change, students will adopt to their new environment. In order for the graduates of tomorrow to be competitive in the real world, their knowledge of their surroundings will have to be outstanding. To what creed will the students answer, and how for will their pursuit of excellence extend?

First, one has to analyze the current success rate of students graduating from Smith. According to Chris Canipe, a counselor at Smith, more that 95 percent of students who could graduate will graduate. This includes a number of juniors who graduate from a junior homeroom. Canipe also said that over the past 30 years the percents of seniors who plan to attend a four-year college is about 40 percent.

The dropout rate will increase because students who leave Smith and go to GTCC will now be counted as dropouts, not transfers, Canipe noted.

In 10 years students will have increased knowledge about computers because of ever-changing technology. My guess is that of Smith graduates who go to college, 50 percent or more will major in computer related fields. Why? Because most jobs will involve computer skills. By 2009 every college will offer computer majors. The number of students attending colleges like N.C. State, N.C. A&T, and Georgia Tech will increase. Most students will be major in computer science, computer engineering, computer analysis, computer operator and database analyst. I believe these jobs will be the highest paying jobs in 10 years.

Students not going to college will work and/or attend community college or technical school. The Military will be a very attractive alternative as wages rise and advanced technology give soldiers the necessary skills for post-military careers. Even a greater number of students will go to GTCC, which will emphasize the service industry, especially computer and robotic repairs.
