Stricter attendance policies ahead

Buzz goes the sound of my alarm clock. Today is Aug. 23, 2009, the first day of school. Time to get up and get dressed for school. The attendance policy this year is harsh and everyone will know if I’m not at school.

I get dressed and jump into my air car to head off to Ben L. Smith. Oh, no! I forgot my swipe card to count me present for today, so I go back in and grab it off the kitchen table.

At school, the parking lot is getting crowded. I land my air car and my wrist alarm signals to me that school will be starting in two minutes. I take the escalator to my voice-activated locker and put away my lunch money. This year our school has food courts for lunch. I can’t wait for lunch time.

Entering the classroom right in the nick of time, I scan my ID card as it records my presence by reading my social security number. I sit down at my computer table and take out my laptop and turn to the TV screen to see my teacher. She introduces herself and starts telling the class about the attendance policies for this year. I’m thinking to myself: I hope they aren’t stricter than last year because I really had fun going off campus with my friends. The teacher continues to talk over the TV saying that all attendance will be recorded on swipe cards and sent via E-mail to the main office downtown every hour of the school day, parents will be notified of student absences via E-mail, not paper, and the part that really caught my attention was when she told us we would be rewarded two vacation days of our choice if we had perfect attendance for one whole semester.

This is going to be the perfect school year, all I have to do is come to school and swipe my card for one whole semester and then I’ll be rewarded with two days at the end of the semester.
