The High Barrier

   Unsheathing your sword, you steel yourself to face the oncoming monstrosity. There is an impact as the creature, its features still indistinct, collides with the bridge. Tentacles, seeming to sprout from the thing, wave aimlessly as though dazed. Taking advantage of the opportunity, you strike at the nearest one, causing the creature below to howl in pain. The tentacles begin darting toward you now, and you suddenly find yourself under attack from all sides. You call out for Shila, but get no answer- out of the corner of your eye, you spot her form on the bridge, lying still, the life being crushed from her by at least two tentacles. You try to hack your way through the hostile things to her, but there are simply too many. One grabs hold of your leg, pulling you down with vengeful force. Instantly, you are covered with the creature's appendages as they pull you off of the bridge and into the abyss below....
