Eleein
Eleein
You follow the cleric until you reach a larger set of doors. He opens
these and hurries through. You follow, not quite understanding what
sort of explanation this is. You are about to ask, when you spot the
tapestries lining the wall. Suddenly, you find it very difficult to keep
from laughing- you are on these tapestries. The artists who created
these have depicted you triumphantly leading armies against the horrid
enemies of the clerics.
'You haven't seen these before?' the cleric asks, sounding surprised.
You shake your head. Studying the tapestries, you suddenly remember
why they're there. A while back, you helped the clerics get rid of
a few fanatics that had been plaguing them. Apparently, they
were a lot more grateful to you than you had previously thought.
You spend the next few moments walking around the tapestry room,
looking at the various other battles that have been commemorated
here. One entire wall is filled with a giant mural, depicting the battle
against the Onyx. You pay special attention to it, but learn nothing
new. The other cleric, whose name is Christopher, says little during
this- apparently, he is content just to have a famous man like yourself
here. Quite a few other clerics have stopped in, resulting in a small
crowd. They're not saying anything- just watching you watch the
tapestries. On the whole, the scene is quite humorous.
'What's going on here?' A commanding voice demands from the
entranceway. The clerics look like they're about to bolt, but
Christopher steps forward to face the newcomer.
'We have a guest, Father Atanak.' he says, in a reverent tone.
The elder cleric looks skeptically over the group, and then sees you.
His attitude changes somewhat as he recognizes you, but he is no
less curt with the others.
'So I see.' Father Atanak. 'Why was I not told before?'
Nobody answers.
The cleric sighs. 'Very well. Go back about your work.' The clerics
obey silently, leaving you alone in the room with Atanak. 'So, the noble
Sir Nichols has returned to our humble temple.'
You can't tell whether Atanak is being sarcastic or not, so you simply
reply, 'Yes, I have.'
The cleric nods. 'I remember your last visit, Sir Nichols. I remember
the battle that you fought for us. I, too, fought in that battle.' He looks
you in the eyes, and for a moment you are sure he is going to strike
you. 'There was nothing noble about that fight, Sir Nichols.
The fanatics, contrary to what most people were told, were not a
threat. I fought because I had to. I suspect that you did so too, but
it was your choice to join a violent group. I joined this temple out of
love for the Creator, and wanted no part in such crusades. I warn you,
Nichols, that if you are here to start another such conflict, there are
many who think as I do. The whole of the Eleein order is not behind
you.'
You can't think of a suitable reply. The man is entitled to his opinion,
you suppose... You don't say anything.
The Cleric steps back, looking somewhat surprised at his actions.
Quickly composing himself, he gestures toward the door. 'For now,
however, you may stay in our temple. I shall have one of the Clerics
show you to a spare room.' Atanak exits abruptly, leaving you alone
to contemplate his words. It is not a good sign- if a second war with
the Onyx becomes unavoidable, the Eleein order might not intervene.
Without them, the outcome of such a conflict would most certainly
not be favorable. After a few moments, your thoughts are interrupted
by Christopher entering the room.
'This way, Sir Nichols'
