Joining
the Hello World Plan
During early
April of each year, the Sendai Board of Education begins to recruit potential
Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) for the forthcoming employment year (August
to July).
JET Programme
ALTs in their third year (inside and outside of Sendai) and other individuals
are invited to apply for entry into the Hello World Plan as long as they are:
- native speakers of English.
- citizens of one of CLAIR's
JET recruitment nations (i.e. Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South
Africa, the United Kingdom & the United States of America).
- under 35 years of age
at the beginning of their contract (usually mid July of the application year).
Applications are checked
in early April and interviews
are held in Sendai at the end of the month. Applicants must pay their own transport
expenses to and from the interview in Sendai. The following explains the basic
details of the position:
- Contract: 1 year
(successful HWP applicants can re-apply for a further year's contract to a
maximum of two years on the HWP).
- Working Hours: 8:00AM
to 4:00PM, Monday to Friday, 5 days per week.
- Remuneration: Y300,000
a month. Medical and pension insurance is automatically deducted. Also automatically
deducted is rent not covered by Sendai's rent
subsidy (see below).
- Accommodation: The
city rents out single-occupancy apartments and pays key money for these apartments.
- Furniture & Appliances:
The city loans successful applicants the following: washing machine,
refrigerator, ceiling lamps, heater, futon set, kotatsu table and cover, cooking
range, toaster oven, rice cooker, curtains, vacuum, iron and ironing board.
Upon completion of the contract, these items must be returned in the same
condition they were loaned. Telephone lines are not provided.
- Rent
subsidy: The city provides a rent subsidy of Y40,000 per month. The balance
of the rent is the occupant's responsibility, and will be automatically deducted
from their salary.
