A

ACACIA: (Acacia sengal)
Folk names: Cape Gum, Egyptian Thorn, Gum Arabic Tree, Kikwata, Mkwatia, Mgunga, Mokala
Ritual uses: Wood is used in sacred fires, as well as in building temples in India.
Magickal uses: A sprig of the tree placed over the bed wards off evil, as it does when tucked into the turban in Eastern countries. When the wood is burned with sandlewood the psychic powers are stimulated. Acacia is also used in money and love spells, although in the latter case the outcome would be a platonic love.

ADAM AND EVE ROOTS: (Orchis spp.)
Poisonous, should not be ingested.
Magickal uses: Carry the two roots in a small bag at all times to attract love. If you wish to be free from amatory competitors, also carry the two roots sewn into a small bag. Given to a couple they ensure continued happiness.

ADDER'S TONGUE: (Erythronium americanum)
Folk names: American Adder's tongue, Adder's Mouth, Yellow Snowdrop, Dog's Tooth Violet
Magickal uses: Soak some adder's tongue in cold water and apply it to a wound or bruise (wrapped in a piece of cloth) until the herb grows warm. Next, bury the wet herb in a muddy place. The wound will be cured.

AFRICAN VIOLET: (Saintpaulia ionatha)
Magickal uses: The purple-colored flowers and plants are grown in the home to promote spirituality within it. When grown they are also slightly protective.

ARGARIC: (Amanita muscaria)
Poisonous, do not ingest.
Folk names: Death Angel, Death Cap, Magic Mushroom, Redcap Mushroom, Sacred Mushroom, Fly Fungus
Ritual uses: There is speculation at least some of the mystery religions of classical times centered their secret rituals around the use of the amanita.
Magickal uses: Place on the altar or in the bedroom to increase fertility. Unfortunately, the amanita is so virulently poisonous it is unwise to use it.

AGRIMONY: (Agrimonia eupatoria)
Folk names: Church Steeples, Cocklebur, Garclive, Philanthropos, Sticklewort, Stickwort, Umakhuthula, Ntola
Medicinal uses: A tonic and bitters herb, specifically stimulating to the liver for strength and increase of bile flow. Primary uses: for appendicitis with Calendula; for childhood diarrhea and urinary incontinence. Secondary uses: for childhood indigestion, chronic appendicitis, and colitis; as a suppository with cocoa butter to expel tapeworms, to tighten hemorrhoids.
Magickal uses: Use in all protection sachets and spells, also to banish negative energies and spirits. Break hexes and send them back tot he hexer. Placed under the head will make one sleep as if dead, according to ancient lore, but don't use this for insomnia: the sleeper won't awaken until the herb is removed.

AGUE ROOT: (Aletris farinosa)
May antagonize some oxytocins (pitocin).
Folk names: Ague Grass, Bitter Grass, Blackroot, Crow Corn, Stargrass, Starwort, True Unicorn Root, Unicorn Root, Aletris, Blazing Star
Magickal uses: Sprinkle around the home to keep evil at bay, or carry in a sachet for the same purpose. Also, use in hex-breaking and uncrossing rituals and mixtures.

ALFALFA: (Medicago saliva)
Folk names: Buffalo Herb, Lucerne, Purple Medic, Jat, Qadb
Medicinal uses: Leaf and seeds. A highly nutritive herb, rich in carotene, vitamin K, chlorophyll, amino acids, octacosonal and a full spectrum of minerals and trace minerals. Primary Uses: for arthritis, to stimulate the body to remove inorganic mineral deposits from the blood, as a blood clotting agent in counteracting internal bleeding from ulcers, and as an estrogen precursor for menopause. Secondary Uses: for indigestion and its attendant conditions, in reducing blood sugar levels, in lowering cholesterol and in the prevention of tooth decay.
Magickal uses: Keep in the home to protect from poverty and hunger. It is best placed in a jar in the cupboard or pantry. Also, burn alfalfa and scatter the ashes around the property for this purpose. Also used in money spells.

ALKANET: (Alkanna tinctoria, Anchusa spp.)

Folk names: Dyer's Bugloss, Orcanet, Dyer's Alkanet
Magickal uses: Alkanet is burned as an incense to purify the area of negativity, and is also used to attract prosperity in all its forms.

ALLSPICE: (Pimenta officinalis or P. dioica)
Folk names: Eddo, Madere, Basheen, Kouroubaga
Magickal uses: Allspice is burned as an incense to attract money or luck, and is also added to such mixtures. Allspice is also used to promote healing.

ALMOND: (Prunus communis, P. dulcis)
Bitter Almond not for internal use.
Folk names: Greek Nuts
Magickal uses: Almonds, as well as the leaves and wood of the tree, are used in prosperity and money spells. Additionally, climbing an almond tree is said to ensure success in business ventures. Eating almonds will cure or combat fevers as well as give the partaker wisdom.

ALOE VERA: (Aloe vera)
Not recommended for ingestion. Should not use if pregnant, nursing, or with diahrrea.
Folk names: Burn plant, Medicine Plant, Saqal, Zabila
Medicinal uses: Gelatinous interior of the leaf. A "contact healing" herb that promotes rapid cell regeneration after wounds, rashes, burns and skin problems of all kinds. Primary Uses: gel, externally, as a healant for all infective and fungal skin conditions; juice externally, as an eyewash to overcome scleroderma and dry eyes; juice, internally, as a laxative and bowel toning agent. Secondary Uses: as an anti-biotic for internal infection and ulcers, and as a vermifuge for internal parasites.
Magickal uses: Guards against evil influences and prevents household accidents. Hung in a house it provides luck, money, protection etc.

ANGELICA ROOT: (Angelica archangelica)
An anise-like digestive agent, bronchial aid, and emmenagogue. Primary Uses: to stimulate appetite and assimilation of food; as an expectorant to relieve inflammatory conditions of bronchitis, pleurisy and pneumonia. Secondary Use: a soothing aid for menstrual cramping.

ANISE SEED: (Pimpinella anisum)
A highly aromatic licorice flavored seed, basically used as a digestive and bronchial aid. Primary Uses: in throat-coat, soothing cough teas, digestive, and enzyme stimulating blends. Reduces blood pressure. Relieves muscle spasms. Good for arthritis and liver problems. Acts as an antioxidant and as a sedative. Contains iron and vitamins A, B, and C.

CHAMOMILE FLOWERS: (Matricaria Recutita)
A soothing tonic herb with absorbable calcium, that improves digestion and assimilation and relaxes nervous tension.
