William Elsey Connelley (son of Constantine Conley and Rebecca Jane McCarty) was born March 15, 1855 in Wolf Pen Branch, Jennies Creek, Johnson Co., Ky., and died July 15, 1930 in Topeka, Ks.. He married (1) Julia Francis Witten on July 18, 1874. He married (2) Sarah Atlanta Fyffe on January 13, 1885. Notes for William Elsey Connelley: After the death of Julia, William Elsey migrated to Wyandotte, Kansas. He taught school 1881-82. William Elsey was irked by the shortening of the Connelly name to Conley. In an ironic twist, as William tried to return to the old spelling he added an extra "e". Many of his descendant live in Magoffin County today and still spell the name Connell-e-y. William Elsey served as County Clerk for four years. In 1911 he received an Honorary MA Degree from Baker's University. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Kansas Oil Producers Association which resulted in the dissolution of The Standard Oil Company by the U.S. Supreme Court. He was appointed secretary of the Kansas Historical Society. He prepared the first vocabulary ever written of the Wyandotte Indians. He also wrote histories of the Delewares, Shawnees,and other tribes.
