SERMON ON THE MOUNT
"Sermon on the Mount" by Grant Clawson

I would have loved to sit down on the long green grass
And reverently listened so everything came to pass
On that gently slopping, flowered covered knoll,
And heard the words of the Saviour so long ago.

I am sure His voice soothed a sad sorrowing soul,
Given others comfort, helped them feel whole,
The healing power of the Son of God here among men,
How still I would have sat with Him, been with Him then.

Did those listening know how long-lasting those words were,
How, if they were followed, could be the perfect cure
Of most of the ills of life if everyone lived that way,
Instead of the wars and torment that beset us today.

If all men had lived by these eternal, blessed rules,
Instead of thinking they knew better than God’s jewels
Of wisdom, spoken sweetly by God’s own beloved son,
So showing us the way, so God’s heaven may be won.

Let us all do our best to follow the golden path
Called the beatitudes, That gives us all the father hath,
Read that scripture often and strive each day to be
Closer to the Saviour and prepare for the joys of eternity.
