PAINTING OF JOSEPH
Joseph Smith Portrait by Alvin Gittins

Every time I walk past the painting, his eyes follow me,
Those deep set, sad eyes are kind, yet look at you piercingly.
The noble head is held high, but not in worldly pride.
The great power that Joseph had is very hard to hide.
He restored the truth to earth in these the latter days,
Gave us the knowledge to follow much wiser ways
Than was ever known before, the way of light,
The way of truth, the way to reach heaven bright.
He translated the Book of Mormon, not by his own hand,
But through the power of God, by some hard to understand.
A boy with little education read each hieroglyphic word,
Revealed many of God’s mysteries, angel voices heard.
Some believed, the gospel grew, yet some men hated him,
Wanted to destroy him, thought the truth was just a whim.
Even Joseph’s martyrdom could not God’s truth destroy
That was stared years ago by a young farming boy.
Joseph the seer, Joseph the good, who God did love,
Joseph the prophet of the Lord, watches in heaven above.
