THE ANNUNCIATION
Painting "The Annunciation" by John Scott
What was Mary doing when the angel called her name?
From that moment her life would never be the same,
“Hail thou art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women.” Oh, sweet Mary,
I wonder what emotions filled that pure, tender heart
As the angel stood before her explaining her part
In the great plan of our salvation, a young mother to be,
Conceived in a miraculous fashion, so we can be set free.
The faith of Mary must have been so strong and sure,
Her life almost perfect, every action sweet and pure,
To accept with gentle humility to be the mother of our Lord,
To obey, saying in a voice low, so only Gabriel and God heard.
“Behold thy handmaiden be it unto me according to thy word.”
Only Luke has a record of this sacred thing that occurred,
He must have been blessed to listen to Mary’s visitation,
Perhaps told him when she was rather old and life almost gone.
I know that moment would never dim, every detail held clear,
As Gabriel told her she was be to the mother of our Saviour dear.
