“WHY STAND YE GAZING UP TO HEAVEN.”
Painting
As He said farewell to His faithful apostles one day,
And they were gathered around Him, He went away,
Ascended in a cloud into heaven in such a glorious way.
They were transfixed, as they heard one of the Angels say
“Why stand ye gazing up to heaven? Jesus who was taken up
will come again in like manner.” Oh, the joy in their cup
That must have overflowed as they went back to each home,
Then Matthias joined them, the twelve began to roam.
Now endowed with the holy spirit, given from on high,
As winds rushed and tongues of flame they did espy,
Oh, the utterance given them, how they knew what to say,
How they longed for Jesus to return to them one day.
They know that He lives, for He had ascended before their eyes
To dwell till the time appointed up in the heavenly skies.
We know He came to Joseph in the sacred grove in spring,
Preparing the world for a very special, sacred happening,
For now we have the gospel and wait with the apostles of old
For that time appointed, for the millennial reign to at last unfold.
