THE ‘ORNERY KETTLE.

We bought a new kettle, tall and stately as can be,
It looks grand on the counter top there for all to see,
But if you can believe it, it has a will of it’s very own,
Once or twice through the window it’s nearly been thrown.

Sometimes it just does not want to boil, it’s purpose in life,
Unless it thinks it should just sit there like a pretty wife,
For you fill it up, plug it in, and turn the kettle on,
Then it should boil in a few minutes while your gone.

Sometimes it obliges and it boils away, quite fast,
And other times you wait and hope it will boil at last,
You twiddle with the cable, then shake it about a bit,
Peep inside to see heat bubbles, till it gives you a fit.

If you happen to threaten it, it behaves for quite awhile,
Then you are all happy and you can even give a smile
Thinking it is going to be good and do what it should,
Then all of a sudden it plays up, you really knew it would.

Times when you’re in a hurry and you need it very fast
Is the time it takes forever to boil, you give up at last
And when the microwave is just about ready to beep,
It starts to boil and out of the spout steam does creep.

I really should get a new kettle to save what’s left of my sanity,
But this may sound silly, but I’ve grown fond of it you see,
So if I try and remember to really threaten it a time or two,
It may last a normal kettle life and live it’s life through.
