MISERABLE OLD MEG

Old Meg lived just across the street, all alone was she.
She never smiled, rarely spoke, as miserable as can be.
Tall and skinny, and always wore clothes of black,
Dad said, if she tried to smiled her face would crack.

No one ever knocked at her lonely old front door,
Meg did not go out often, stayed cleaning carpet and floor
And windows were cleaned every week inside and out,
Her home must have sparkled and dust free without a doubt.

I sometimes felt sorry for old Meg always alone every day,
So one morning I crossed over, just went a little out of the way
To give a smile and say ‘Hello’, dad was wrong, her face was fine
As she returned my greeting, then I took her boney hand in mine.

She took me into her home and gave me a candy from a glass jar,
She seemed a different person now, no frown her face did mar,
Her eyes shone bright like diamonds, a tear glistened there,
We had all misjudged old Meg, and that was not at all fair.

She told me how lonely her long life had always been,
Orphaned as a baby, no parents remembered or seen,
Brought up in a orphanage where little love was shown,
Her best friend died when young, the only love she’d known.

There is no one in my life that I can call a true friend,
No one anywhere if in trouble on whom I can depend,
No one who would weep if I just went and passed away.
At least child and friend, not until this every special day.

I went and told my parents this great sad tale of woe,
They told others and I told my friends, and now we go
And visit meg quite often bring her little gifts and love,
Found she was good with animals and birds that fly above.

One day I took her a kitten, the prettiest from our cats litter,
He was blue point Siamese and such a friendly little critter
She held him on trembling hands and stroked his fur,
He nestled down, closed his eyes and gave a loud purr.
Now I can love again, you friends have seen to that
And my house will now be a home, now I have a cat.
