THE SUNSET

I climbed to the top of the knoll
That is close beside our home
Just before the setting sun
Sank deep into the nightly gloom.

The wind blew gently from the south
With the promise of early spring,
The grass showing signs of new life
And the birds in the bushes did sing.

I saw a full train in the distance
As if it were in some far off dream.
For I was captured by the sight
The most wonderful sight I had seen.

The sky had been bright blue that day
With small snowy clouds quite high,
The suns descending rays painted them
With pastel pink as they floated by.

The sphere of blazing redness bright
Made the world, like Eden, truly fair
,
For the sky was filled with colours
That human mind could not compare.

When reds and purple, pinks and blues

Weave a tapestry to please the soul
And mind of man, the beauty cannot be told
And seeing it heals us and makes us whole.

I stood on that little knoll for a long time
After the sun had descended beyond my sight,
And wondered if those in the farther west
Had been fed and strengthened by the light.

I will always love a sunset and will often look
To see if there will be one so pure while I live
As the one I saw the other eve on the knoll
By my home when spring was just coming alive.
