THE NIGHT
The lights went out in the big city,
No artificial light was to be found.
It was then the people realized
What wonderful beauty could be found
In the dark of night, when only the moon
With silver rays, and the bright stars,
That fill the sky can be seen
By the human eye. They sparkle like diamonds
Set in a dark blue velvet cloak,
Draped from east to west and enhanced only by
The simple grace of the moons cold rays.
But if you live far from the city lights
That do not bedim the pure night sky,
When the clouds all roll away you will
Always see the stars in their glory.
The moon in her stages of growth or decline
Wander across the heaven like a queen sublime.
Each star a courtier, some great, some small,
Then they shine the brighter when she is not there.
So wander at night by a lonely lake, or when
The lights in the city die, and gaze in wonder
At the heavens and ponder awhile
At the marvel above, ignored by man
Most of the time. But is always there,
Aloof, grand, with beauty so rare that we
Poor humans could not comprehend
The power, or majesty, that it takes
To set into motion this incredible sight,
So marvel, and give thanks for the great
Beauty of each night.
