FIRST FIRE OF FALL
The day was dark and overcast,
Summer days were gone and past,
The wind blew cool, and the rain
In dismal, drenching torrents came.
We came home glad to be dry,
Safe from the threatening sky,
But everywhere needed cheering
The whole home wanted something.
So, the first fire of the fall was lit,
Oh, how close we did both sit,
We listened to the crackle,
The fire had won the battle.
The flames licked the logs so dry
We wondered if theyd warm the sky,
The home with warmth did glow,
Outside we did not want to do.
Slowly, the flames flickered and died,
Just a small glow in hearth, and inside
Two forlorn people that dismal day,
When the first fire drove cold away.
