THE START OF WINTER
The lake today has a sparkling silver sheen,
As the weak sun breaks through clouds of grey,
A covering of snow, where green grass had been
Heralds that winter has begun, more cold on its way.
No more children playing on the sandy shore,
No more splashings in the water like before
When the suns rays were friendly and warm,
No more leaves rustling, just trees in skeletal form.
The few gulls seem hidden in the cold waves
For both are grey and white as the lake heaves
In obedience to the cold relentless wind that blows
For winter is returning again, making many foes.
But there is beauty in a stone grey, silver lake
And the stark branches such a grand design they make,
The virgin snow glitters with encrusted diamonds fair
And the waves are horses just galloping everywhere.
Do not use summer alone to walk by the lake
Wrap up warm and some effort try and make
To view the winter scene of pure silver and white
And enjoy winter, let it fill you with delight.
