        ALSO RAN
In a race there is only one winner,
        two others well placed,
But many others strive muscle, heart
        and sinew in haste.
How do they feel when they have
        struggled and did not win?
How sad they all must feel although
        they committed no sin,
Three names are remembered with
        happy, loud acclaim.
They may go down in history ablaze
        with honourable fame.

Now what about your local team also,
they want to reach the top,
Yet however hard they seem to try
        other teams will stop
Their claim to fame, a bad call or
        a safe call not seen,
They want to reach the finals, play
        the extra game or two,
They become an also ran although
        they strive all season through
To do their very best, almost make
        the top of the board
It does not matter if they miss by one
or only a few points scored.
I always feel sorry for those who also ran
        having done their best,
Because we all realize there’s one winner
        and many of the rest.
