OLD SAYINGS
There are many sayings full of great philosophy,
Sayings told when I sat quietly on my mothers knee,
Some I understood, others did not mean a thing,
Now some ring true and sweet wisdom to me bring.

“Put a bit away for a rainy day, the sun wont always shine.”
Tells me to try out of every dollar to save just one dime,
Or when things are on special buy on extra can or two,
Then when hard times hit, they’ll help see you through.

“A stitch in time, will save you nine.” mom always said,
Sew one small split before you have to use lots of thread,
Learn to make do and mend, learn to knit and try and sew
And through life these small talents will bless you so.

“Do not put all your eggs in one basket,” was another tale,
Now this has many meanings, meanings that do not fail,
Not just money in one place but scattered all around,
Broaden your horizons, you have many talents to be found.

“Listen more than you speak. We have one mouth and two ears.”
The Lord did this for a purpose I have learned over the years,
For if we really listen, not interrupting before you hear what is said
You will have many sweet blessing poured upon your head.

“Stop and think before we speak a word to any man,”
Is one that should be put into action whenever we can,
For cruel words spoken can cut deep and cause pain,
And we cannot retract those harsh words ever again.

There are many others that teach us things we should do,
Here have been mentioned to you just a very few,
But on these let us contemplate and much better be
By remembering the things taught at your mother’s knee.
