EYES AT THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD.
Everyone knows that mothers have. . . .
eyes at the back of their head.
Alert from the early morning
till each child goes off to bed.

Please do not eat the little cakes
they are for Mary who is sick,
and darling you know quite well
your nose you should not pick.

Watch out that chair is broken,
please don’t climb on it,
If dad sees you wearing his new shoes
he would really have a fit.

Every word spoken kindly,
seen with eyes at the back of the head,
even through walls and doors
gentle warnings are often said.

How do mothers do it?
I really do not know at all,
neither does it fade when children
have grown big and tall.

For then it time for Nana also
to have those eyes bright and keen,
knowing things done that
really cannot be clearly seen.

I wonder what instinct
developed those other eyes
that will always fill a child
with love and utter surprise?
