WHEN I GROW UP
When the children were all small
Life was so much fun for us all,
The things they used to do and say
Made us smile through many a day.
Careers arose one home evening night,
When I grow up I want to be a knight
In shining armour, put the world all right
And for Jesus and the gospel boldly fight.
We smile and explained best we could
About knights today, he understood,
Then said Phil I will be a fireman instead
And wear a funny hat upon my head.
I want to teach teachers how to teach
When I grow up, Id go to the beach,
Show students the tides, feel the wind and sand,
That way everyone would learn and understand.
We smiled at Becky with her big brown eyes,
Nothing she ever said came as a surprise,
Shed play school with her dolls and teddy bear,
Went on sometimes as if noone else were there.
When I grow up a kind, loving nurse I want to be,
Look after sick folks, but not at night like mummy.
Look after babies, but not old people who die,
For that would make me sad, Id want to cry.
We nodded and smiled, Its in the family,
That is good Heather, but let us wait and see,
It would be good to have another nurse around,
New ideas and drugs and things to be found.
David the youngest stood with a wide grin
When I grow up I want to be a canarian
A canarian we all cried in utter dismay,
What dear David do you mean to say?
He placed his hands on his hips and sighed
I want to make sick animals better, he cried
We took Honey to the canarian the other day
And he made her quite better in a magic way.
A veterinarians the word, we said with a smile,
David stopped and thought for quite awhile,
Thats what I said, canarian, it sounds the same,
Well thats what I want to do just the same.
The children are grown and done other things,
Yet we remember that day and the joy it brings,
For family memories bind us close together,
Not only in this life but also after for ever.
