ABOVE AND BEYOND

Medals and citations are given to those who do a brave deed,
Above and beyond the call of duty these people did exceed,
A soldier ran to save a buddy under heavy fire and shell,
Someone ran into a burning house, it was the fire of hell,
To save folks trapped inside, and many other deeds done
All over and they were rightly praised, many medals won.
Yet how many in everyday life struggle to keep a smile
When suffering in pain, many help others go the extra mile,
Parents often sacrifice above and beyond the bounds required
For struggling children, there’s no reward, yet they never tire
Of serving in a quiet way with small deeds that saves a life
From despair, save a soul from deep sin and the pangs of strife.
A neighbour for many years helps with kindly unknown deeds,
Another visits a blind friend and their mail and book reads.
Above and beyond’s are done many times without a reward,
Yet they are counted in heaven, where kind deeds afford
A place where angels sing and the Lord will kindly say
“Your reward is in heaven, where you will ever stay.”
So when someone is knighted and a citation freely given,
Think of those who serve, but will have their reward in heaven.
