More poems about Horses.

I THINK I HAVE HAD MY DAY
The old horse was weary and his head hung quite low
As up to the edge of the meadow he very slowly did go,
His dimming eyes could still see the big, old oak tree,
And he remembered the days gone by when he ran free.

Many a child had ridden his back, he did it just today,
He thought in his heart that will no more come my way?
He remembered the acres he’d ploughed and pulling logs
And all the many friends he’d had in little cats and dogs.

One human child had loved him, had brought him everyday
A nice big juicy apple and he hoped she’d pass this way,
For one more time he wanted to feel her hand on his mane
And although she was now grown her child did just the same.

The little one was running to reach him before her mother, there
Holding out an apple and away went all his sorrow and despair,
He looked into their eyes and neighed to them his last farewell,
They made him feel so special in dying, maybe they could tell.

I have lived a good life and been always treaded well by all,
But now I must answer to a more powerful and greater call,
Maybe there are children in heaven who need a horse ride,
Or heavens fields need ploughing, I’ll go and do it with pride.

In the barn that night he quietly slipped away to heaven above,
A horse that had been the best he could and always gave his love,
Many mourned the death of their dear friend so kind and true,
When you die and reach heaven please let him play with you.
