        WHO DONE IT
A dear friend of mine one winter day
Put apple peelings by her back door,
Busy around the house she went away,
Then from the back a great noise did pour.

Such a squarking and chattering was heard,
From the vicinity of her nice, quiet back yard,
There she saw in a tree something quite absurd
And from stopping laughing she found it hard.

For draped on the branches of her leafless tree
Were garlands of apple peel, just hanging there,
With a squirrel and a blue jay arguing fiercely,
One had placed those peeling up there with care.

Which one was defending, which one the thief?
It was hard to tell, so why not both just share
The goods hanging up before they came to grief,
She had to go out, leave them quarrelling there.

On returning there was no apple peel to be found,
Both creatures gone and peace was everywhere,
The puzzle was over but a mystery does abound,
Maybe there’s a story to be written with care.
