A STRANGER
A handsome younger stranger wearing
a turban,
Dark eyes, sideburns and a face of
dark tan,
Not drawn separately but as an equal
that I can see,
Which in the early 1900's was not classed
as normality.
Could those be medals on his left
hand breast?
Was he a noble Gurka in England
on leave?
What a shame we cannot see the length
of his sleeve.
But there he is in Grandad’s painting,
honourable as can be,
Maybe that stern face would give a
smile at me.
