        THE CYCLISTS
Fred J Margetson ca 1910
A young couple gazing in the distance,
Her scarf blowing in the wind, what chance
Of they of happiness, will wishes come true?
Each holding a cycle that looks quite new.

The detail of the wheel spikes, mud guards too,
Even his cross bar and seat are in plain view,
The bows on her shoes, her hat with a brim,
His leggings and style of cap a modern whim.

The drawing is intense only half a face you see
Maybe as they stand there he proposes matrimony,
Will the tentative hand slide around her tiny waist?
Will she snuggle close or pull away in shy haste.

How long did he watch them? Did he listen and smile,
I wonder how far they cycled maybe many a mile,
With just a few strokes of charcoal and pencil bold
He drew a wonderful story that was only partly told
