PATTYS NEW DRESS
Patty needed a prom dress but the family were poor,
And in the stores there was nothing she liked for sure,
But on a side street was the really perfect prom dress
With sleeves and not low cut but would really impress.
She wandered past that window time and time again,
How she wanted that dress to all was really quite plain,
She plucked up courage went in the ask about the cost,
The dress was not outrageous so all hope was not lost.
Shed get a job and earn the money they would lay it by,
Five dollars to hold it said the owner a twinkle in her eye.
She found a job at weekends being a funny party animal,
Maybe three parties on Saturday dressed up, she did well,
Sometimes a rabbit or a teddy bear or a cute grey mouse,
Shed have fun as the children chased her round the house.
Each week shed put a few dollars toward her dress so pretty,
For her not to have enough money would be a great pity,
Each time she went they let her try that great prize on,
Indeed it seemed made for her, her heart the dress had won.
Her parents had seen the gown that she wanted for her own,
It was a treat to see the great effort she had constantly shown,
As last a week before graduation the last payment was made,
No longer of not having her lovely dress was she at all afraid.
It looked even better than before as it lay in its own pretty box,
With a pair of flowered knee highs instead of thick white socks,
Then another blessing came with change and the owner did say,
There is thirty percent off grad dresses just for the rest of the day.
You should have seen the sandles the family had for her bought
And the picture of grace and beauty that young lady wrought,
Much better than any happy fairy story at least in my mind,
Through hard work and effort her great prize she did find.
