BEECH WOOD AND BEYOND
There used to be a path through a place called Beech Wood,
And I used to go there as often as I possibly could
In the spring when the lady-smocks and blue bells, daisies too,
Made a magic carpet that covered the wood right through.
The canopy of beech leaves kept out any wind that blew,
A few miles out of the city along a narrow country lane,
It had a few houses on it but I cannot remember its name,
But is was so tranquil, just the sound of nature was there
And the fragrance of flowers after the dirty city air.
I used to cycle there with my lunch and a good book
Before sitting to read at the beauty I would take a look,
Little did I think that 60 years later I would still see
In my minds eye Beech Wood in its simple beauty
Most of the trees were copper beech so lovely to behold
But the wood is no longer there so I have been told,
I am glad I knew that special place so many years ago,
For still my memory there many times does often flow.
