GETTING OLDER
It must be a sign of getting older when you forget a name
Of someone you know well, you hang your head in shame,
Part way into a sentence you forget what you’re talking about
And of having all your marbles and sanity you begin to doubt.

You can remember well the day when baby began to walk,
Remember the very first time at church you gave a talk,
Can recall things you learned at school many years ago,
This shows at least your brain works far memories can show.

But you forget an event you’ve been waiting for for days,
Then you can kick yourself for your head being in a haze,
Make a shopping list and forget it and buy the wrong thing,
Two lots of salt and no pepper can much frustration bring.

My body is still quite active, my thinking still quite clear,
It is my short term memory loss that I now truly fear,
I’d forget my head if it was loose my granny used to say,
Well I am beginning to think of myself in the very same way.
