More poems about Family at Christmas

NOT HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
I have to write and tell them,
I’ll not be home on Christmas day,
There is too much action
all around and home’s too far away,
The feeling of Christmas
cannot be found around here,
There are too many bomb craters,
every heart full of fear.
I will not ride the big red sleigh
across the frozen lake,
Or help baste the large turkey, make
stuffing and gifts to take
To those round about who may be
in distress and dire need.
I will not watch the lights sparkle
or the hungry birds feed,
I will not be in church all the sweet
carols to lovingly sing,
Or gather in the wood for a fire
more cheer to bring.
I know mom won’t give up, she will
look every day for the mail
For a different letter, for to read this
one will turn her pale.
Now the letter is written and thoughts
with the letter go home,
But in war torn areas to serve but my
heart homeward will always roam.
