A NICE JUICY APPLE
When I was quite small and an apple I used to like to eat,
There were four types to choose from of this special treat,
Red shiny ones, yellowy gold, green and two tone to behold,
Mom liked the green ones for cooking, the best I was told.
Now going to the farmers market the sight boggles the mind
At the many varieties of good apples that we can always find.
Red and Golden Delicious, Macks, Courtand crisp and sweet,
Snow, Melba, Coxes, grannys, Empire, and Matsu a new treat.
Not to forget in this list of apples that are good to cook and eat
Are Spartan, the Ida red, Jonagold all lovely full of juice white meat.
Now I know that I have missed some names that fill us with delight,
Some are best for pies and crumble, others for eating just right.
An apple a day will keep the doctor away we have been told,
I think the people knew a thing or two in those days of old.
This time of year when the farmers market is a mass of fruit galore,
It is hard for me to choose which of all those apples I like more.
