More poems about Calamities

POWER FAILURE
Driving along the road and not one traffic light was on,
No lights in the store windows, had some damage been done?
Most of the drivers were good and kind, four way stop routine,
We did not see an accident though no police as yet were seen,

Yet how could they man every busy lightless intersection?
Then like good citizens many volunteers went into action,
Then the car radio let us know that we were not at all alone,
But a vast area of the States and Canada in energy was shown.

We were blest by having a gas stove so we could eat,
We could not use the oven, but could cook a little treat
On the top burners, some family members joined the fun,
But a night with no fans to cool us now had too soon begun.

We had plenty of candles and hurricane lamps as well
That safely for ages in the basement they did dwell,
Although they looked so pretty shining bright as could be,
It really increased the heat to a much greater intensity.

Lack of hot water meant no refreshing bath or shower,
I don’t think we realize how much we depend on power.
Our power came on at about 5am I am glad to say
But we have been warned we may loose it again any way.

After each verse I have saved this poem, just in case,
I’ve had a quick shower this new day to gladly face,
If the power goes off again with guests coming to dinner,
We’ll fire up the barbeque and sit in the sun and simmer.
