        MOTHER’S DAY GIFT
A curious Mother’s Day gift was given to me,
One tomato plant as small as it could be,
All the ladies at church were given one,
It seemed quite a strange thing to be done.

Two friends were away from home so I had three,
You should see them now, tall and strong as can be,
Having to be tied up the branches so very heavy,
Hundreds of tomatoes that will soon be ready.

Better than the farmers market are your own,
Just picked and eaten, the best is home grown,
Enough for many a salad or pick one to eat,
Enough for spaghetti sauce for many a treat.

But I have to wait for at least another week or two
For the tomatoes to be red and ripe right through,
And then, when that first cold frost comes our way,
I’ll make green tomato chutney one frosty day.

I’ll save some seeds and dry them in the sun
Then in early spring more plants will come,
And so my Mother’s Day gift will grow again,
Thanks, now idea of the gift is so very plain.
