DEAD SKUNK
At the side of the road a large dead skunk lay,
Any dead creature a sad sight as you go your way,
But a sadder sight still, three babies left by her side,
Their worry and fear those little ones did not hide.
Could they manage on their own? Were they suckling?
Was that why they still stayed to the body clinging?
So small, so frail, could they find their way home?
Or would they wander aimlessly and in fear roam?
Three small orphans no one to take care of them at all,
We stopped the car and we could hear each plaintiff call,
As if, like a human child, trying to awake a resting parent,
As we looked on our tender hearts with pity were rent.
A truck screamed close by, in fright they ran quickly away,
We hoped they would make it live through another day,
But as we know nature is cruel both in death and life,
Maybe a swoop of an eagle or hawk will relieve their strife.
