PACMAN FROG

Common Names: Argentinean Horned Frog, Bell Horned Frog
Scientific Name: Ceratophrys Ornata
Origin: South America, mainly Argentina
Size: Males to approx. 7 inches, females to approx. 9 inches. Weight up to one pound.
Sexing: Males will be smaller at adult size with sometimes a black beard around the chin area. Males will also call. Females are larger in size and lack the black beard.
Temperament: Best if not handled, observation only. Will eat other tank mates, so only one frog per tank.
Life Span: 7-9 years.
Habitat: Tank:Very small frogs—up to half dolar size—do well in critter keepers. Adults need at least a 10 gallon tank. They are not great jumpers or climbers, but it's best to have a screen. Low, long tanks are better than tall ones.
Substrate: Reptile substrates made from soil and terrarium moss are appropriate. Do not use dirt or moss from your yard. Make the substrate deep enough for the frog to bury itself in and keep it damp. Clean regularly to keep fungus and bacteria from growing.
Heating: Keep the temperature about 78°-82° F using an under tank pad heater. Heat lamps will dry the frog out and heat rocks may burn them.
Lighting: If you use lighting, use flourescent reptile lights because incandescent lights dry their skin. Only leave lights on nine to twelve hours.
Other: Offer a container of water large enough for the frog to sit in but water levels should not be above the chin. Clean the water bowl out at least every other day or the frog may get a bacterial infection. If using a large water container or creating an aqua-terrarium, use a filter. Decorations such as sticks for climbing are unnessasary.
Food: Small frogs will eat small fish, crickets, earth worms, mealworms, waxworms, and small pinky mice. Adults eat mice, small rats, and larger fish. Dust them all with vitamins and feed every other day. Use plenty of variety.
