Goodness, Passion, & Ignorance

B A C K to THE ANALYTICAL PAGE

Goodness, Passion, & Ignorance are not discussed as a unified topic in the Bible, but the basic concepts are there, none the less, in both the New and the Old Testaments.

Below are a few Biblical quotes which convey the same ideas. The words referring to Goodness are easily recognized. Passion is often referred to as "works;" Ignorance is referred to as "sloth." Evil is more or less passionate Ignorance. Good is often Passion melded with Goodness. A righteous King is Good. A powerful hedonist is Evil.

Goodness

O sinless one (Arjuna), the mode of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminating, and frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge. BHAGAVAD GITA 14.6

.

Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound.

They will walk, O Lord

in the light of your countenance. PSALM 89:15

.

The light of the body is the eye.

Therefore when your eye is single (God conscious),

Your whole body also is full of light. LUKE 11:34

Passion

The mode of passion is born of unlimited desires and longings, O Arjuna, and because of this the embodied living entity is bound to material fruitive actions. B.G. (GITA) 14.7

.

All things are full of labor.

One cannot express it;

the eye is not satisfied with seeing,

nor the ear filled from hearing. ECCLESIASTES 1:8

.

Whatever my eyes desired, I did not keep from them,

and I did not withhold my heart from any joy (pleasure),

for my heart rejoiced in all my labor,

and this was my portion of all my labor. ECCLESIASTES 2:10

Ignorance

Know that the mode of darkness, born of ignorance, is the delusion of all embodied entities. The results of this mode are madness, indolence and sleep, which binds the conditioned soul. B.G. 14.8

.

It is an abomination for fools (in their opinion)

to depart from evil. PROVERBS 13:19

.

Slothfulness casts (a person) into a deep sleep;

an idle soul will suffer hunger. PROVERBS 19:15

The Three Modes

The mode of Goodness conditions one to happiness, Passion conditions one to fruitive action; and Ignorance, covering one's knowledge, binds one to madness. B.G. 14.9

.

The light of the righteous rejoices. PROVERBS 13:9

.

I made myself great works. ECCLESIASTES 2:4

.

Your place is amidst deceit,

"Through deceit they refuse to know me,"

said the Lord. JEREMIAH 9:6

.
