HYPNOSIS-
ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE
FOR MODERN PEOPLE
By Diane Fleming
"Close your eyes, relax and see the beautiful white light enter your body. Watch the light take all the discomfort away." These were not the words spoken by a Hypnotherapist to a client. They were the words spoken by my concerned father to me when I was ill as a child.
I later learned how to use the words and gestures which enabled me to facilitate others in hypnosis. I was also taught to trust my intuition, to travel out of my body, to determine future paths people mat choose and how to use the ever present, abundant universal energy which surrounds us. I also learned the impact which herbs, color, scent and sound had on healing.
These skills, often called the "Magical Arts" are part of Humankind's natural heritage. Some ancient people practised these arts and learned new ways to improve their techniques. They handed this knowledge to promising descendants, who, in turn, chose some of their children and grandchildren to entrust with the secrets. Eventually these Family Traditionalists and their craft became known as Witchcraft, or The Craft of The Wise.
Every country has had their share of Family Traditionalists. Some of their oral teaching degenerated into superstition and folklore, while the rest became perfected and protected. In recent years, this sacred knowledge has made a huge comeback under various names. People from a variety of backgrounds became Holistic healers. Some of them have no idea where their professions evolved from.
When I decided to use one of these skills (hypnosis) as an occupation, and took classes for my certification diploma, I discovered that there was no magical secret to this phenomena. Hypnosis is an aspect of psychology, and whether we know it or not, we are hypnotized on a daily basis.
Hypnosis is one step beyond concentration. It happens whenever we pretend. Often we pretend that a movie we are watching is real. Hypnosis happens when we begin to sympathize with the hero and begin to dislike the antagonist. Why do some movies bring tears to our eyes? We know that these actors have lives outside their roles in the film. We are aware that they had to study scripts and that they get paid very well for portraying their parts. Still, a movie can invoke such strong feelings in most of us that our emotions literally alter our bodies in subtle ways. Our body temperature can rise, our heartbeats can quicken and our eyes can water.
If images on a screen can change our bodies, think about the potential healing impact hypnosis can have on us.
There is a strong link between the body and the mind. when we are in good physical condition, we are often in a positive state of mind, and when we are in a positive state of mind, ailments seem to vanish. People in a state of hypnosis are able to anaesthetize various parts of their bodies. Hypnosis has been used as a tool to facilitate natural childbirth, dental work and surgery.
I am presently working with clients who are aiming at professional breakthroughs. They want to take the big jump to surpass their former achievements. Real Estate agents are increasing the number of properties they are selling, golfers are winning more tournaments and sales people are tallying up more sales. They are all using hypnosis in their personal daily routines. I am also working with people who want to come to terms with trauma from the past to grow into healthier futures. A shy client who had no friends has emerged from her self-imposed cocoon as a happy social butterfly. An angry man came to terms with abuse and found that when he loved himself, he attracted love from many others.
The ancients used self-hypnosis to impart a deep belief in their minds. Our issues today are quite different from the challenges faced by our ancestors. We do not have to extend our senses to locate animals for food or coax the crops to grow, instead, we have more personal matters to contend with.
We are slowly beginning to understand that the timeless art of hypnosis is a state of mind, or mood. When we change our mood from a negative one to a positive one, we are able to improve our lives. When we are able to improve our lives we are able to improve conditions on earth for ourselves and others.
