Casting the Circle

Basic to the ritual practice of any Wiccan is the act of Casting a Circle. This fundamental Rite accomplishes many things simultaneously

We define the scope of the physical ritual, and, at another level, the scope of its effect.
We create a sacred space, and thereby elevate the space we have to a more spiritual plane.
We erect and fortify a barrier to contain energies raised, and to protect others from them, should anything go wrong. (This differs from the practice of traditional Western Ceremonial Magic, which uses cast barriers to protect the practitioner from the results of his or her conjurations.)
We mark what we are about to do as special and separate from the mundane world.
And, perhaps most important, we define the basics of the Rite to be performed and, by doing so, define, in broad terms, our beliefs.

Enter HP and HPs from the Northeast, cross to Pre-set Altar. Both kneel

HPs:Picks up water (7) and moves it to the centre of the pentagram (3). Picks up athame (1) and places point in water. Draws Pentagram of Invoking Water while reciting the blessing.

I exorcise thee, O creature of water. Let all malignancy and hindrance be cast herefrom, and all good enter herein. Wherefore do I consecrate and cleanse thee in the names of Cernunnos and Aradia.

Withdraws athame, dries tip, and replaces it in the North. (1) Returns Water (3) to the West (7).

HP: Picks up athame (1) and salt (6) and moves salt to the centre of the pentagram (3). Places athame point in salt. Draws Pentagram of Invoking Earth while reciting the blessing.

Blessings be upon this creature of earth. Let all malignancy and hindrance be cast herefrom, and all good enter herein. Wherefore do I bless and invoke thee in the names of Cernunnos and Aradia.

Withdraws athame, cleans tip. Returns Earth (3) to the North (6). Picks up incense (5) and places it in the centre of the pentagram. Places athame point in incense. Draws Pentagram of Invoking Air while reciting the blessing.

Blessings be upon this creature of air. Let all malignancy and hindrance be cast herefrom, and all good enter herein. Wherefore do I bless and invoke thee in the names of Cernunnos and Aradia. Withdraws athame, cleans tip, and replaces it in the North. (1) Returns Air (3) to the East (5).

HPs: Picks up charcoal (4) and moves it to the centre of the pentagram (3). Picks up athame (1) and places point on charcoal. Draws Pentagram of Invoking Fire while reciting the blessing.

I exorcise thee, O creature of fire. Let all malignancy and hindrance be cast herefrom, and all good enter herein. Wherefore do I consecrate and cleanse thee in the names of Cernunnos and Aradia.

Withdraws athame, cleans tip, and replaces it in the North. (1) Returns Fire (3) to the South (4).

HP: Picks up Earth (6)

Behold Earth!

HPs: Picks up Water (7)

Behold Water!

HP: Picks up Athame (1). Collects some Earth on the tip of athame, adds it to the Water

Bth: As below....

HPs: Returns mixture to the West (7)

HP: Returns Earth to North (6) Picks up Air (5)

Behold Air!

HPs: Picks up Fire (4)

Behold Fire!

HP: Collects some Air on the tip of athame, adds it to the Fire

Bth: ... so above!

HPs: Returns mixture to East (5)

HP: Places Air to the side (1)

Bth: Join hands over the athame, and draw a Pentagram of Invoking Passive Spirit over the altar

QGAl:Enter, circle deosil to their respective positions, and stand facing away from the centre of the Circle.

HPs: Picks up mixture from West (7) and begins to circumscribe the area, travelling deosil, sprinkling a little of the mixture with each step.

I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, that thou be a meeting place of Love and Trust, a refuge against the Realm Phantasm. Wherefore do I consecrate thee with these emblems of the power of our Great Mother, and in the Names of Cernunnos and Aradia.

HP: Picks up mixture from East (5) and begins to circumscribe the area, travelling deosil.

Blessings be upon this Circle, that it be a rampart between the world of Men and the Realm of the Mighty Ones. Wherefore do I bring these emblems of the power of our Lord. Blessings be upon us all in the Names of Cernunnos and Aradia.

HPs: Opens a doorway in the Northeast of the Circle, and admits others 'on the point'

Bth: Travel to each of the Quarters in turn, and invoke the elemental Guardians appropriate to that direction by drawing the appropriate invoking pentagram while the HPs and HP recites the calls.

HPs: Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the East, ye Lords of Air, I do summon, stir, and call thee up, to witness this rite, and to guard this Circle.

QGA: Thou hast called me from the realm of whirling Air....

HPs: Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the South, ye Lords of Fire, I do summon, stir, and call thee up, to witness this rite, and to guard this Circle.

QGF: Thou hast called me from the realm of blazing Fire....

HPs: Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the West, ye Lords of Water, of Death and Initiation, I do summon, stir, and call thee up, to witness this rite, and to guard this Circle.

QGW: Thou hast called me from the realm of rushing Water....

HPs: Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the North, ye Lords of Earth, Boreas, thou Guardian of the Sacred Portals,....

HP: Thou powerful God!

HPs: Thou gentle Goddess, I do summon, stir, and call thee up, to witness this rite, and to guard this Circle.

QGE: Thou hast called me from the realm of steadfast Earth....

QGAl:..... and I stand now in thy presence to guard thy circle.

HPs: We have summoned the Quarter Guardians. Now we join together in the union that will bring forth Spirit.

HP: We join together in love and trust with the Guardians of Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

HPs: The Quarters are called. The Guardians answered. We stand outside of time, in a place not of earth. As our ancestors before us bade, we join together and are one.

Bth: Grasp the athame, and trace a Pentagram of Invoking Active Spirit towards the ceiling.

Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the Soul, Ye Lords of Spirit, we do summon, stir, and call Thee up, to witness this rite, and exalt this Circle.
