A Bridge for a Buck

I was very impressed with the wood beam bridge the late John Allen used in the French Gulch section of his layout. It was of a unique design that has never been modeled that I know of. I don't know if he ever did an article on how it was done; however, I enjoy building something from pictures as it now becomes a challenge to see if I can duplicate it.

I had recently acquired a box of coffee stir sticks from which some other scratch built structures were built. These same sticks seemed as though they would lend themselves to this project.

The five inch long sticks were laminated three wide with the joints staggered for the upper and lower beams. Individual sticks were used for the herring bone pattern of the beam tie supports.

Small pieces of the same material was angular cut to duplicate the gussets that tie the wood members together. Thread was strung up and down to represent the "tie" cables. A table saw was used to cut the long rail beam supports that you see in groups of three. Campbell bridge ties and Micro Engineering code 83 rail finished the model. Leather dye stain worked excellent for capturing the color Mister Allen had on his bridge.
