I have just started research into the South African connections on my Mother's side. There is a Family Bible which none of the younger siblings of my eldest Aunt have been allowed to see.( I believe it is with her daughter Arlene Shuttleworth) As far as I have been told we are descendants on Mom's side,of France's "Sunking". I am starting out in researching the Ferreira family history in South Africa starting from Ignatio Ferreira being shipwrecked on route from Lisbon to India on the "Chandos" in Table Bay on the night of 16 June 1722. Various marriages include Terblanche,S utte, Cronje, Pohl in 1834, Erasmus in 1862, Pretorius, Stirrup in 1962. I am also trying to get the Ferreira coat of arms. Edmund OToole won a Victoria Cross in 1879 during Zulu War. Seeking information about his life, where born, death, any recorded information - how ever small, desentants if any. He was a Sergent and then latter a Captian. But he is recorded as serving unde Captian Heany at Mashonaland in 1890 and is also recorded in "The Black and White Budget " magaizine from 1900. He is listed in the book "For Valour - the History of Southern Africa's Victoria Cross Heroes" by Ian Uys in 1973. He is said to have immigrat d to USA after 1890 but was still in South Africa (if source can be believed) in 1900. Any information is vital to research. Thanks.

I would like to know more about my mother's family who were Ruiters and my father's family Brooks. Both my parents lived in Port Elizabeth until approx 1953 when they emigrated to England. My mother's parents were John Percival Ruiters (a Tailor) & Martha Warmington?? I'm not sure of my grandmother's exact name as both she and her husband were illegitimate and so the family haven't been very open about the past.
