Last night I was about two chapters from finishing "Masters of Deception"
but my eyes were so heavy and dry I was tearing. I had to wait until this
morning to get to the end. I shouldn't have tried to stay up and get
through it -- I had to go back thirty pages anyway because I couldn't
remember anything I read after my 1 a.m. Coke. I liked it a lot. I didn't know half the things it covers about the start of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Phiber Optik and the whole mess that became the genesis of the CDA. I realize now that a lot of what I knew about this stuff was mostly cliche. I signed the petitions, I bought my T-shirts, I stole a few copies of Wired... but as far as the personalities, politics, different philosophies of privacy or hacking? Only now I have a vague idea. Gotta get a poli-sci major to read this. The last pages were painfully anticlimactic, but I guess fittingly so. When you write about the federal government trying to figure something out, you're not looking at a Hollywood ending. Derek and I are finally connecting tonight. I wonder how many movies I've missed by now? We're going to see either "Hunchback of Notre Dame" or "Stealing Beauty." If we go to the former, I'm kinda worried all the stuff I've been reading (it's a disservice to the handicapped, it's more of the same 'ol "ugly-people-get-shit," etc.) will ruin it for me. Then again, Derek apparently has a thing for Liv, and I don't want to be seen with a man who's drooling on himself. Classes start again in a month. Even though I find I slack more when school's in session, I'm still moaning about it. And I can't believe tuition is over a grand this year. I swear, someone explain how I could be asked to pay more for fewer classes and shorter library hours? Maybe I'll just go part time. I don't want to give up my Queen's job, especially if I can't work at the university. Not that "only" six-credits are that much cheaper. It's beautiful out. The week of rain wasn't as fun as I thought it'd be, so it's nice to see the sun again. One of these days I should wake up early enough to hike Diamond Head and watch the sunrise (or can I only do that during the winter?). Any time after 9 a.m., the trail's clogged with tourists. Hey, that's right! Xena is on tonight (hey, Jen got me hooked -- laugh at her ). Gotta figure out if I can set the VCR timer without the remote. Doesn't look like it.
