"Dan Quayle was right... We need to protect our social and moral foundations; we should not be forced to send a message to our children that undermines the definition of marriage." -- Rep. Tom DeLay, Texas

What planet did this joker come from?

I don't know anyone who can say that with a straight face. "Dan Quale was right." It flows off the tongue about as sweetly as lumpy vomit does. I'm just appalled. Instead of reflecting on my chance meeting with Derek, I'm going to say this instead:

This country's going all bugfuck!

Protect social foundations my ass. What we have are misty-eyed men trying to protect their holier-than-thou regime by catering to the lowest (yet most conceited) elements of the country. A bumper sticker I see 'round here sums it up: "If you don't believe in same-sex marriage, by all means don't have one!"

Most "morals" mean shit. The majority knows shit (I've been mulling over this all week, so look out). The definition of marriage has not been a stable institution since everyone's favorite long-haired outcast was nailed to a tree 1,996 years ago. Within my grandmother's lifetime, there was a time when our "moral" nation said it was wrong for a white person to marry someone who was Japanese. Doing so meant losing American citizenship.

This shouldn't be about "right," or God, or rule by mob mentality. It's civil, human rights, plain and simple.

"Dan Quayle was right." What a hoser. I pity this man's daughter, who -- if his father's peers are still in power when she grows up -- will likely end up revisiting the 40's role of barefoot-and-pregnant-in-the-kitchen.

All this about kids needing a daddy and a mommy doesn't sit well with me either. My dad last poked his tentacle into my life ten years ago, and since then I'm without a doubt better off.

Well, yeah, I might be a little bitter...
