WELCOME,MRS. BRACCIO'S CLASS!

Your job today is to compare and contrast the Navajo Long Walk and the Cherokee Trail of Tears. You have been studying the Navajo Long Walk.

Today we will use the Internet to find information about the Cherokee Trail of Tears. You will take notes on what you find, so that when you return to your classroom, you can compare and contrast the two events.

As you search for information, you will find that each page on the Internet has a certain type of address.

Here is a sample address (the technical name is URL, which stands for Universal Resource Locator.)

      http://www.apple.com

  • each URL begins with http  (that tells the computer what kind of language is coming)
  • www stands for world wide web
  • the next part is a host name (sort of like the town or city)
  • the 3-letter tag is the domain: it tells what kind of site it is (com=commercial    org=organization   edu=education)
  • other parts of the URL refer to the path and the name of the file.

  •

    So,let's go searching!

1.Click on the following URL and answer the questions on your Internet guide.

        http://www.Cherokee.org/history.htm

2.Now you will look at two sites that give a different type of information about the Cherokee Trail of Tears.

Refer to your Internet guide for instructions.

        http://users.townsqr.com/homebrew/trail.htm

        http://www.members.tripod.com/~Poetspotlight/CAM1.html

3.Your last task is to go searching yourself.  We will use a search engine called "Yahoo."

                    Here's how you get there:

                                1. Type apple L

                                2. A box will open.

                                3. In the box, type this URL

                                            http://www.yahoo.com

                                4. The Yahoo search site will ask you to type in a "search term."

                                5. Type in "Trail of Tears."  (Use the quotation marks.)

                                6. Very soon, a page will appear with a list of sites that have to do with the "Trail of Tears."

                                7. Refer to your Internet Guide for instructions.

    4. I'll bet we're out of time by now.  When you return to your classroom, you can compare your information and think
about the ways the two events were the same and how they were different.

    5. Thanks for coming to this site!

    See you soon.
