Genetics Review

You should know:

  • All the basic terminology used in genetics eg. homozygous, heterozygous, hemizygous.

  • Gregor Mendel and the work he did to pioneer the understanding of genetics.

  • The rules of probability and how they apply to genetics.

You should be able work out problems in a Punnent square with:
    1. monohybrid crosses
    2. dihybrid crosses
    3. sex-linked recessive traits
    4. sex-linked dominant traits
    5. autosomal dominant traits
    6. multiple alleled traits
  • You also must know how to work out family trees.

  • You also should be able to determine the phenotypic and genotypic ratios for the above type crosses. Remember though, you need not know genotypic ratios for dihybrid crosses.

  • How to determine blood types. The inheritance of blood types, ABO system and the Rh system.

  • The basic rules for inheritance in each of the traits discussed. eg. who inherits traits from whom when it is a sex-linked recessive trait? or a sex-linked dominant trait?

  • Non-disjunction , it's causes, and syndromes that are caused by it. e.g. Kleinfelter's, Turner's.

  • Methods of detecting genetic errors in developing fetuses. e.g. amniocentesis, fetoscopy, CVS

  • Population genetics ( Hardy Weinberg Principle) and how alleles in a population can be predicted. 1
