This is the main square in Ouro Preto where the first conspirators for Brazilian Independence conived against the Portuguese crown. Tiradentes, their leader, was arrested, hung, decapitated and had his limbs torn from his body as a warning to other potential independence minded Mineiros. His head was displayed here in this square where a statute was later erected in his honor. His birthday, a national holiday, is celebrated on April 21.
