A Genealogy of the Barr Family of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio

Fourth Generation

28. Charles Enness(4) Shiras {Ellen Enness,(3) Susan,(2) William(1)} was born 7 June 1856[1] in Cincinnati and died 15 July 1891 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.[2] He grew up in Cincinnati and possibly attended school with his brother, William, in Racine, Wisconsin. On 28 May 1878 at Ottawa, Kansas,[3] he was married to Marie Antoinette Knapp [born 1 April 1860 in Coxsackie, New York,[4] the daughter of Clara Louisa (Jackson) and Dr. Abraham Huntley Knapp;[5] died 16 March 1934 in Mountain Home, Baxter County, Arkansas[6]].

The marriage notice, cited above, says of the couple:

For the past few weeks nothing has been talked of in society circles here but the approaching marriage of Mr. Chas. E. Shiras and Miss Marie A. Knapp, daughter of Dr. A. H. Knapp. Charley is one of the most popular young business men of the city, and Nettie, as her friends love to call her, is an acknowledged belle...Promptly at the hour the bridal party -- Dr. Knapp with the bride, and the groom with his brides mother -- advanced down the aisle...Charley and his bride took the afternoon train for the East, and will pass a few weeks in Cincinnati and other cities.

The Kansas state history cited above says of him:

C. E. Shiras, dealer in groceries, provisions, and wooden and willow ware, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 29, 1856, and came to Kansas in the spring of 1875, locating at Ottawa. He was for two years employed as a clerk in the People's Bank. In 1877 he engaged in dry goods business in company with C. D. Crane, remaining in that business about two years. Was then not actively engaged in business until January, 1882, when he purchased his present establishment from his brother, W. M. Shiras. The subject of our sketch has a nicely fitted up store, carries a stock of about $3,500, and is doing a large trade.

Nettie filed for divorce from Charley in August 1889 in Miami County, Kansas, where her parents lived in Ossawatomie. The divorce was granted in October, to be final in six months. In a statement of 19 October, she stated that Charles was at Sedalia, Douglas County, Colorado. His step-sister, Mary (Shiras) Jones, was living there at the time with her husband, Thomas. By 1893 when Nettie's father's estate was settled, she had married P. H. Gehr.

On the day before Charles' funeral, The Republican in Ottawa (17 July 1891) wrote:

William Shiras returned with the remains of his brother, who died at the Palace Hotel, Cedar Rapids, Ia., on the Kansas City train at noon today. They were taken to his residence from where funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock a.m. tomorrow. Rev. Morrill will conduct the exercises, and the interment will take place in Hope Cemetery.

Issue:

i. Thomas Spencer(5) Shiras {Charles Enness Shiras,(4) Ellen Enness,(3) Susan,(2) William(1)} was born 24 February 1879 in Ottawa, Kansas. After the divorce of his parents, his mother and her children lived in Kansas City, Kansas. Tom and his brother Enness worked at the Drovers' Telegram in Kansas City -- Tom as a reporter and Enness as a linotype operator.

In the early 1900's, Tom's mother and step-father, "Captain" P.H. Gehr, a miner, moved to Mountain Home, Baxter County, Arkansas, where Captain Gehr had a good deal of mining land. Tom loved the area, and a few years later purchased the local newspaper, The Baxter Bulletin, in partnership with his brother Enness.[7] The paper remained in the family for over seventy years.

On 15 January 1908 in Mountain Home, Tom was married to Mayme Case[8] [born 1880 and died 1978,[9] the daughter of Jennie (McFarland) and Dr. J. H. Case].[10] Tom died 15 January 1947, his 39th wedding anniversary.

ii. Edith Knapp(5) Shiras was born about July 1881 and died 21 January 1883.[11]

iii. Enness Barr(5) Shiras, my grandfather, was born 16 April 1883 in Ottawa, Kansas.[12] Like his brother, he was forced for financial reasons to quit school at an early age and go to work at the Kansas City Drovers' Telegram. Enness, however, was involved in the actual mechanics of printing rather than writing.

When he first saw the facilities of the newspaper that Tom had purchased in Mountain Home, he was horrified by what he considered the primitive equipment. Soon, however, he had grown to love the people of the Ozarks, as they loved him.

On 12 June 1912 in Evansville, Indiana, Enness married the art teacher at Mountain Home Baptist College, Francesca Posey [born 24 January 1883 in Petersburg, Indiana, the daughter of Harriet Emeline (Brown) and Francis Blackburn Posey].

Francesca died 27 December 1957 in Mountain Home and was buried in the Mountain Home Cemetery. Just three years later, Enness' wish was granted, and he joined her on 27 February 1961. His son, Charles Peter "Pete" Shiras, who was the Editor of the Baxter Bulletin at that time, wrote a touching remembrance.

iv. Harriet Knapp(5) Shiras was born on 16 February 1885[13] and died in 1942 in Mountain Home. She is buried there in the Mountain Home Cemetery. She was unmarried.

29. William Mortimer(4) Shiras {Ellen Enness,(3) Susan,(2) William(1)} was born 21 May 1859 in Cincinnati.[14] He moved to Ottawa, Kansas, in 1875 and

he has been identified with this flourishing city and has done much to promote its interests. Identified with the board of trustees of Ottawa University...he has done much to aid this worthy institution..is very fond of his guns and dogs...came to Ottawa and entered the People's National Bank as assistant cashier, in time becoming a stockholder and director...1881, he bought an interest in the excelsior mill, of which he is one of the proprietors...also interested in a gas company which is prospecting for gas...Politically he is a Republican...

Newspaper stories of the day and area report that William married Cornelia Belle Adams of Cleveland, Ohio, on 14 May 1879 in Cleveland.[15] She was born 4 July 1859 in Cleveland, the daughter of Seymour A. and Elizabeth (Hoyt) Adams, and died 8 August 1943.[16] William Mortimer Shiras died 22 October 1904.[17]
