September 2, 1998 - (c) And something just plain silly...

As a typical "young" person -- I'm not that old -- my generation has a certain characteristic about them regarding the phone. Okay, not really my generation, but my gender. :P As a typical "young" female. Well.. I don't get it.

I only have one friend who I can talk hours with, and even then, I can only talk on the phone with her after a substancial amount of time has passed. Sounds reasonable, doesn't it? We don't see each other for a month or so, so when we talk on the phone, we catch up (ie. gossip).

I admit I don't call people much, but I see no reason to. Oh, sure, I could call up just to see how some old friend are doing.. but it ends in ten minutes flat. "Oh, I'm doing nothing much." Tell me, how much conversation material can you build up on "nothing much"? I just don't get it.

It's not to say I don't get phone calls. I do. But as far as I can remember, every phone call I've received is regarding a 'problem' that needs to be solved. For instance, a friend called me last night to ask me about some assignment. Or a few days ago, another called me about her computer. Five, ten minutes tops. 'Problem' solved, phone put down. Isn't that what the phone is for? So what's this with really, really long phone conversations...especially between people who see each other every day!

I have a friend who's always on the phone. Not that she calls people, but people call her. I've asked her what she talks about, and she says . . . "Nothing much." In fact, she has admitted she doesn't really know what to talk about. Now, I could excuse her with the possibility that the people who call her do all the talking..thus the long hours. But those same people call me at times, and never have our conversations reached an hour!

It doesn't make sense. Am I somehow phone-conversational-retarded? Is it some skill I missed cultivating somewhere? Ironically, I've got more expensive phonebills. :P Mostly because of the good ol' Internet. ( sighs ) I just can't win.
