Forgive Me

Part I
Everyone thought she was sunshine itself
If cliches be permitted
Her laughter ever constant
Her smile ever present
For everyone hungered for some cheer
They dared not look through the corner of their eyes
And I, only by chance,
Caught a forbidden tear roll down her cheeks

Mystified, confused, equally blind as the other
I did not understand, I did not wish to
But in the quiet, in the corner
I began to hear the cries of a song
That sang of a sadness, unfathomable

For every smile she gave
I began to learn
There is a fleeting wince of pain
For every laugh delivered
I began to learn
There is a sob of anguish in silence
But no one saw, no one knew
And so I willed myself to ignorance
Who am I to say what is
When others have not?
